A Psalm of Life

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,

Life is but an empty dream! ─

For the soul is dead that slumbers,

And things are not what they seem.

 

Life is real! Life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal;

Dust thou art, to dust returnest,

Was not spoken of the soul.

 

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

Is our destined end or way;

But to act, that each tomorrow

Find us farther than today.

 

Art is long, and time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,

Still, like muffled drums, are beating

Funeral marches to the grave.

 

In the world's broad field of battle,

In the bivouac of life

Be not Like dumb, driven cattle!

Be a hero in the strife!

 

Trust no future, howe'er pleasant!

Let the dead past bury its dead!

Act, ─ act in the living present!

Heart within, and God o'erhead!

 

Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime,

And departing, leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time;

 

Footprints, that perhaps another,

Sailing o'er life's solemn main,

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,

Seeing, shall take heart again.

 

Let us, then, be up and doing,

With a heart for and fate;

Still achieving, still pursuing,

Learn to labor and to wait.

 

 

 

인생찬가

인생의 한갓 헛된 꿈이라고

슬픈 곡조로 나에게 말하지 말라!

잠든 영혼이야 말로 죽은 것이니

보이는 것과 실제는 다른 것이다.

 

인생은 진실이다. 인생은 진지하다!

무덤이 그 목표는 아니다.

너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가라 라는 말은

영혼에 대해 한 말은 아닌 것이다.

 

우리의 예정된 목적지 또는 길은

즐거움만도 슬픔만도 아니다;

단지 내일이 오늘보다

더 낫게 되도록 행동하는 것이다.

 

예술은 길고 세월은 빨리 지나간다.

우리의 심장이 튼튼하고 용감할지라도

이것은 여전히 낮은 북소리처럼

무덤으로 가는 장송곡을 울리고 있다.

 

세상의 넓은 싸움터에서,

인생의 야영장에서,

말없이 끌려가는 짐승이 되지 말라!

싸움터의 영웅이 되라!

 

달콤하다 하더라도 미래는 믿지 말라!

죽은 과거는 죽은 채 묻어버려라!

활동하라, 살아있는 현재에서 활동하라!

가슴속엔 용기가, 머리 위엔 신이 있다.

 

모든 위인들 생애가 일러주는 것은

우리도 장엄한 삶을

살 수 있다는 것이다. 이들은 떠나면서,

시간의 모래밭 위에 발자국을 남겼다.

 

발자국, 아마도 인생의 장엄한 대양을

항해하게 될 다른 사람이

바다에서 난파되어 버려졌을 때

이 발자국을 발견하면

다시금 용기를 갖게 될 것이다.

 

자, 우리 모두 일어나 활동하자,

어떤 운명에도 용기를 가지고;

여전히 성취하고, 추구하면서

일하며, 기다리며 배워나가자.

 

 

※ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807~1882)

 

미국 Maine 주에서 태어났다.

오랫동안 하버드 대학 교수를 지냈으며 시인으로서 명성이 높았다.

서정시집 Voices of the Night(1839), Evangeline(1847), The song of Haiwatha(1855) 등이 유명하다.
